An example content editing workspace in Sanity Studio

Sanity CMS: when structured content makes sense

An introduction to Sanity Studio, Content Lake and the decisions to make before choosing a headless CMS.

What is Sanity CMS?

Sanity is a headless CMS: content management is separated from presentation, so the same content can power websites, apps, and other channels. Content is structured exactly the way your organization needs it and retrieved through APIs — giving developers the freedom to build custom solutions, and editors a workspace tailored to them.

The key building blocks

Three parts set Sanity apart from a traditional CMS:

  • Sanity Studio: a React-based editing interface, customized to your organization's content types and workflows.
  • Content Lake: a versioned content database optimized for fast, secure retrieval, with traceable changes and real-time collaboration.
  • APIs (GROQ and GraphQL): content is fetched programmatically, so the frontend can be built with whatever framework fits best — in our case, usually Next.js.

When is Sanity the right choice?

Sanity fits when content should be reused across surfaces, when editors need a tailored workspace, or when the site is built with modern frameworks without the constraints of a traditional CMS. For simple blog sites, a traditional CMS can still be cheaper to get started with — we're happy to help you weigh the options.

Consider the whole solution

A CMS decision involves more than the licence. Establish who will model the content, maintain the editing workspace and build the frontend. Test the editor experience with a small set of real content before committing. Include migration, previews, integrations and ongoing maintenance in your assessment.

See schemas and content models in Sanity’s documentation.
